What is Family Therapy? Family therapy involves a whole family or several family members, all meeting with a therapist. Family therapy can be helpful if a family is having difficulties getting along. It can also be used when one family member is experiencing a problem and the family relationships are contributing to the problem or maintaining the problem. In many cases, the problem may be exhibited by a child, but this may not always be the case.
Why Play Therapy? Play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties to achieve optimal growth and development (APT 1997). Children’s play is their language. The use of play can assist in establishing a therapeutic relationship, understanding a child’s interactions and relationships, revealing feelings that haven’t been verbalized, assists in constructively acting out anxiety, tension, and hostility, teaches socializations skills, and provides an environment to test limits, gain insight, explore alternative behaviors, and learn consequences.
